Chapter Four
My club manager nodded in relieved agreement. Her shoulders slumped visibly, as if she no longer had to pretend everything was okay. George finally finished shoving food into his mouth long enough to pull her into a hug. The big brother role heâd taken when he started gave Grace yet another overly large shifter looking over her shoulder.
A few years ago, she would have balked at the idea. Not anymore. For which I was grateful
An annoying buzzing sound came from the front door. I turned to see a tiny pup smacking itself against the glass. Not bothering to cover his laughter, George released Grace and walked over to open the door.
âYou need to come to the warehouse immediately.â The tiny fur ball barked. âSomething has changed. The wolf told me to come get you.â
âWell, that decides it. Iâll be at the warehouse with the boys. Wretch, you head off to the poker game and make sure that capturing the women isnât a distraction for something bigger going on. Grace, go home and heal. I know youâd love to be in the middle of this fight, but I think youâve done enough for one day.â
I was pretty sure she wouldnât argue with me and was relieved when she didnât.
âGeorge, give me a second.â
I didnât wait for his answer as I took the stairs to my apartment three at a time. Once there, I physically changed clothes for the first time in a couple of days. It felt good to slip on an old pair of jeans and a black T-shirt. While I would stand out in daylight, at night, I would blend right into the shadows.
After grabbing a couple of daggers I had stored away in a box, I made my way back downstairs. George was alone, standing at the edge of the shattered glass.
His brow furrowed, he glared at me. âWhy didnât you call me? Havenât I proven myself to you yet?â
âUnfailingly. This wasnât about brute strength. Obsidian has had a two-way door into my ex-fiancéeâs brain for the last hundred years. Today, she not only took over and talked through her mouth, but she was able to shift Tanithâs dragon form into something Iâve never seen in the two hundred years Iâve known her.â
His stance relaxed and he smacked me on the back.
âThen I guess I owe you a thank you. If I had been here, I couldnât have done more than stick her into a wall. And we all know how that turns out.â
He referred to the time a little over a year and a half ago when heâd shoved Obsidian into a concrete basement wall only to find we couldnât cut her head off in that state.
âI know thereâs more to you than just brute strength. Youâre one of the kindest, gentlest beings I have ever met. I couldnât allow this situation here to pull us away from saving people.â
Even though I meant every word, it did sound a little lame coming out of my mouth.
